Market leadership isn't random. It's designed.
Many companies grow through a string of unconnected campaigns: whatever worked last month, repeated until it stops working. We replace that with a clear, four-step method where every step builds on the one before.
From activity to asset.
An expense is money that's gone once it's spent. An asset keeps paying you back. Most marketing is treated as an expense: you pay for clicks, and when you stop paying, the results stop too.
We build marketing as an asset. That means owning three things: your positioning (why buyers choose you), your demand engine (how strangers become sales conversations) and your data (proof of what works). We call these your control points.
Technology supports that plan. It never replaces it.
Four rules we don't break
- We don't skip steps.
Scaling a weak foundation only breaks it faster, so each step is finished before the next begins.
- No ad spend before the Green Light test.
Every tracking and follow-up path is tested with a dummy enquiry first.
- Nothing gets built that isn't on the blueprint.
You see and approve the full build list in advance.
- Every sprint ends with a decision.
Scale, iterate or kill: grow it, change it, or stop it.
Map. Shape. Stack. Scale.
Each step answers one question and ends with a checkpoint you approve. It's a cycle because what we learn in Scale feeds the next round of Map, so the system keeps improving.
- Step 1
Map
Decide where to win.
“Who should we win, and why should they choose you?”
What we do- Score your current growth system with the MoatScore™
- Define your ideal customer: the companies and people most likely to buy and stay
- Pin down the urgent problem you solve and why you win against alternatives
- Align your story with how analysts such as Gartner and IDC describe your market
- List where you rely on rented channels and what you should own instead
What you getThe MoatMap™: a short strategy document with your ideal customer, your positioning and a 12–18 month plan.
Checkpoint before moving onYou agree the MoatMap™ before any design work begins.
- Step 2
Shape
Design the path to revenue.
“How will attention turn into revenue?”
What we do- Map where buyers first find you, and how you'll stay in touch with them
- Design a useful first offer, such as an assessment or benchmark report
- Plan the three to five follow-up steps that lead to a sales conversation
- Decide which signals tell sales a buyer is ready, and how they're alerted
What you getThe Advantage Architecture™: a one-page diagram of the journey from stranger to customer, plus a full list of everything we'll build.
Checkpoint before moving onYou sign off the blueprint and the build list. Nothing outside it gets built.
- Step 3
Stack
Build it and test it.
“Can we trust the system before we put money through it?”
What we do- Set up tracking so every sale can be traced back to where it started
- Connect your website, CRM, email and ad platforms so data flows between them
- Automate follow-ups and alerts to sales
- Negotiate advertising rates with media vendors before spend begins
What you getThe MoatStack™: your tools connected and working as one system, owned by you.
Checkpoint before moving onThe Green Light test: we send a test enquiry through the whole system and check it's tracked, recorded and followed up. No ad budget goes live until it passes.
- Step 4
Scale
Run it, learn, and grow.
“What should we do more of, and what should we stop?”
What we do- Set one measurable goal and a written hypothesis for each two-week sprint
- Split effort between attracting new buyers and helping existing deals close
- Review results with you at the end of every sprint
What you getA sprint report every two weeks: results against the goal, what we learned, and the Moat Impact (what you now own that you didn't before).
Checkpoint before moving onEvery campaign gets a decision each sprint: scale it, change it and test again, or stop it.
Not everyone needs all four steps.
Your MoatScore™, a free five-minute assessment, tells us where to begin. It scores your growth system from 0 to 100 across positioning, data and funnel.
Start at Map
Your growth depends on things you don't control. We fix the foundation first, and may recommend pausing some ad spend until it's ready.
Start at Shape
You have activity but little that lasts. We design the path that turns the attention you already get into an audience you own.
Go straight to Scale
Your foundations are strong. We start running two-week sprints to grow faster.
The words we use, in plain language.
We've given names to the tools and ideas we use most, so we can talk about them precisely. Here's what each one means.
The big ideas
- Moat
- In business, a moat is an advantage that keeps competitors out, like the water around a castle. In marketing, it's what a competitor can't copy quickly: your reputation, an audience you own, your data, and systems that work together.
- Rented vs. owned growth
- Rented growth stops when you stop paying: ad clicks, sponsored posts, bought lists. Owned growth keeps working: your email subscribers, search rankings, customer data and reputation with buyers and analysts.
- Growth by accident
- Results that come from whichever campaign happened to work this month rather than from a plan. They are hard to repeat and easy to lose.
- Control points
- The three parts of growth we help you own: your positioning (why the right buyers choose you), your demand engine (the planned path from first visit to sales conversation), and your data (proof of which activities produced revenue).
- Compounding growth
- Growth where each quarter builds on the last, the way interest compounds. The audience, content, data and reputation you build keep paying off after the campaign ends.
Our method and tools
- MoatCycle™
- Our four-step way of working: Map, Shape, Stack, Scale. Each step is finished and approved by you before the next one starts.
- MoatScore™
- A free five-minute assessment that scores your growth system from 0 to 100 across three areas: how clear your positioning is, how trustworthy your data is, and how well your funnel turns interest into sales conversations.
- MoatMap™
- The strategy we agree with you in the Map step: who your best customers are, the problem you solve for them, why you win, and where you want to be in 12–18 months.
- Advantage Architecture™
- A one-page blueprint of how a stranger becomes a customer: where they find you, what you offer them first, what happens next, and when your sales team gets involved.
- MoatStack™
- Your marketing and sales tools (analytics, CRM, email automation, ad platforms) set up so data flows correctly between them and nothing falls through the gaps.
- Green Light test
- Before any ad budget is spent, we send a test enquiry through your website, CRM and follow-up emails to check that it is tracked, recorded and followed up. Nothing launches until it passes.
- Momentum Sprints™
- Two-week work cycles. Each one starts with a clear, measurable goal and ends with a review of what happened.
- Scale, iterate or kill
- The decision we make on every campaign at the end of each sprint: put more budget behind it, change it and test again, or stop it.
- Moat Impact
- A line in every report showing what you now own that you didn't before, such as new email subscribers, first-party data or content, alongside the usual leads and costs.
Marketing terms we use
- ICP (ideal customer profile)
- A precise description of the companies and people most likely to buy from you, succeed with your product and stay.
- Positioning
- How buyers understand what you do, who it's for and why you're a better choice than the alternatives, including doing nothing.
- Analyst relations
- Working with research firms such as Gartner, IDC and Forrester, whose reports many enterprise buyers use to shortlist vendors.
- Pipeline
- The potential deals your sales team is currently working on, and their total value.
- Pipeline acceleration
- Helping deals that are already in progress reach a decision faster, for example with case studies or follow-up emails timed to where the buyer is.
- Attribution
- Knowing which marketing activity led to each sale, so budget goes where it actually earns.
- First-party data
- Information people share with you directly, such as email sign-ups and form answers. You own it, unlike data held by ad platforms.
- CAC (customer acquisition cost)
- What it costs, on average, to win one new customer across all your sales and marketing spend.
- RevOps (revenue operations)
- The processes and systems that connect marketing, sales and customer success, so leads, data and handoffs move without manual work.
See where you stand.
